Information relative to all students enrolled in art
Every student is a member of an Art Google Classroom. Please become familiar with this classroom by asking your child to show you around. Your student should know where the assignments are listed, where the announcements are posted in the stream and where to turn work in.
I do not collect or handle the student's art work. All assignments are turned in digitally using the chromebook and google classroom. Some assignments will be handed in through the assignment section. Other times, I post a google slide for students to add their work to almost like a virtual gallery so that they can view and comment on the work of their classmates.

Last year, First Semester -- Art projects
These assignments may be used again this year. I included pictures of these assignments so you could get an idea of the variety of projects we concluded last year and the concepts they were based on.
Our first project last year was about design and exploring color schemes. This was a great way to ease into the year and to introduce some basic concepts. The students had to form a design using stencils, tracers, and or rulers. They then had to replicate the design two more times to create a triptych. As a class we studied the color wheel and learned about different color schemes. One color scheme was assigned to each panel of art. The elements of art we focused on were line, shape and color.
Our second piece of artwork last year was a self portrait using the chromebook and Google Draw. Your student will most likely be required to do this project. The students were allowed to import pictures from the internet in combination with using shape and drawing tools from the program. The portrait could be realistic or abstract. The results were amazing! Your students are incredibly creative and enjoyed showcasing their talent and sense of humor through technology.
Our third project was a folder design inspired by Pop Artist Romero Britto. We will be doing this project next. Students explored marketing techniques including fonts and branding. They created a font for their name and branded themselves on their folders. We discussed division of space, line, shape, color and patterns.
Our fourth project last semester was a sugar skull portrait. The students loved learning about Dia de los Muertos and watching some of the movie Coco. It you haven't seen Coco it is an absolute beautiful movie! They could make a skull in memory of someone who has passed away or a pet who is deceased. As you can see below so many students chose animals. Second semester students will not be doing this project. We will be painting landscapes.
Our fifth project, was an animal eye done both with google canvas and on paper with oil pastel. We were studying different ways to make textures with a new medium. Creating a realistic 2-d image that looks 3-d is like a magician performing a magic trick -- they are both optical illusions. We played around with many techniques before we began our assignment. Again, your student's computer skills were astounding!! Directly below are some examples of the google canvas assignment. Further below are works done on paper with oil pastel. I'm going to do the eye on google canvas with my new students but I think I will do a close up animal portrait with collage and oil pastel.
Our sixth project!!! Paper mache. Right before the Holiday break, we switched to working with our hands, getting a little messy and creating an actual form not just the illusion of one. We were limited on time I wanted to make sure the students could bring home their art before the break. They could choose from one of three templates. We built forms with paper towels and masking tape and then we applied paper mache and tissue paper to color our forms. I will do paper mache again, the kids loved it but it will be a diiferent subject matter.
Here they are creating their forms, applying paper mache and tissue paper and then some students painted on top!
Look at these cuties during our festive last week of school ready to bring their beautiful artwork home!!
Here are some fun pictures of the clay projects we made last year. The students all love clay.
Last year, Second Semester -- before the shutdown
We approach grading art from an Artistic Behavior standpoint. We find it to the fairest approach to grading our projects and their ability.
- Focus--coming to art prepared mentally and physically, staying on task, aware of deadlines and due dates
- Co-operate--we write it like that because we want just that, your student able to co-operate within the studio. Helping to pass out materials, help picking them you, caring for their environment and their fellow classmates.
- Creativity--truly this is the ART PART but lets face it this comes more naturally to some than others. We need to celebrate those innovative unique minds but not deter others from trying new things.
- Knowledge--each assignment has set criteria the student should pay attention to and follow. The rule follower will ace this category hands down. We are looking to see if the students utilized the proper skill set and if they followed the correct steps.
